The Lawn Cemetery

Southway, Hatfield, AL10 8HS

The Lawn Cemetery was opened in 1984 by the Lord Bishop of Hertford with the landscape permitting only upright headstones, placed on predetermined concrete plinths at the head of the grave. The size and shape of the memorials are constrained to ensure a unified design in an effort to encourage well maintained grass.

The cemetery covers some 10 Acres of land and to date over 15,000 interments have been carried out across over 3000 graves.

The majority of the cemetery was consecrated on 27th March 1984.  A number of notable members of the community congregated in the cemetery to witness the consecration service conducted by the Right Reverend Kenneth Pillar and assisted by the Arch Deacon of St Albans.

Facilities

The Lawn houses a Chapel which is available for funeral services.  The chapel is non-denominational and is available for services before a burial takes place.  The room is suitable for approximately 50 people and contains an organ and stereo system.  Specific needs can be catered for provided sufficient notice time is given.

Toilet facilities are also available between the hours of 9am and 4pm.  It is important to note that toilets will not be accessible when the chapel is in use.

The Lawn Cemetery is open 365 days a year, including all public holidays and Christmas.
