Public Health Funerals

Section 46 of the Public Health (Control of Disease) Act 1984 places a statutory obligation on local authorities to make funeral arrangements for those who die without anybody willing or able to make the arrangements.

Within Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, this is undertaken by Cemetery Services department.

Arrangements are made in keeping with the deceased cultural and/or religious wishes providing they are known. The act empowers Local Authorities to recover costs from any estate of a deceased person. Any funds remaining then pass to the Treasury Solicitors office.
