Information about the Borough Council elections and a by election for Villages Ward of Hatfield Town Council

Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council elections will take place on Thursday 3 May 2018.  

16 wards will have elections.  13 wards will have one seat filled, and 3 wards will have two seats filled.

There are 3 vacancies on the Borough Council.  A vacancy in Hatfield Villages Ward following the death of Lynne Michele Sparks.  A vacancy in Northaw and Cuffley Ward following the resignation of Irene Hilda Dean and a vacancy in Welham Green and Hatfield South Ward following the resignation of Tom Bailey.

Of the 19 seats up for election, 10 are Conservative seats, 6 are Labour seats and 3 are Liberal Democrat seats.

There is also a vacant seat in Villages Ward of Hatfield Town Council following the death of Lynne Michele Sparks.  The poll will be combined with the Borough Council elections on Thursday 3 May 2018.

Applications for electoral registration

To vote in the elections you must be included in the register of electors.  If you are not already registered, you can register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote or contact Electoral Services by email: elections@welhat.gov.uk or by telephone on 01707 357300 to request an application form.  All registration applications must be received by the Electoral Registration Officer at Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, The Campus, Welwyn Garden City AL8 6AE by 12 midnight on Tuesday 17 April 2018.

Absent voting - by post or by proxy

If you are included in the Welwyn Hatfield register of electors you can apply to vote by post or proxy.   You can download an application form at www.yourvotematters.co.uk, or contact Electoral Services by email: elections@welhat.gov.uk or by telephone on 01707 357300 to request an application form. Once completed, forms can be emailed to elections@welhat.gov.uk

The following deadlines apply for the elections on 3 May 2018:

  • all applications for new postal votes, or requests to change or cancel an existing postal or proxy appointment, must be received by the Electoral Registration Officer at Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, The Campus, Welwyn Garden City AL8 6AE by 5pm on Wednesday 18 April 2018.
  • all applications for new proxy votes (but not postal proxy votes or emergency proxy votes) must be received by the Electoral Registration Officer at Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, The Campus, Welwyn Garden City AL8 6AE by 5pm on Wednesday 25 April 2018.
  • an emergency proxy may be granted where the emergency has occurred after 5pm on Wednesday 25 April 2018 on the grounds of a physical incapacity or for work/service reasons.  All applications must be received by the Electoral Registration Officer at Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, The Campus, Welwyn Garden City AL8 6AE by 5pm on Thursday 3 May 2018.  You should contact Electoral Services on 01707 357300 for advice.
