Appointment of Independent Person(s)

The Council has agreed as part of its Standards regime to appoint a Panel of Independent Persons.  The appointments are for a period of five years.  The last appointments were made in 2012 and we are now seeking new appointments.

Selection Criteria

Independent Persons should:

1.    Have an interest in standards in public life.

2.    Wish to serve the local community and uphold local democracy by playing a key part in promoting and maintaining high standards of conduct by Elected Members .

3.    Demonstrate high standards and personal integrity.

4.    Be objective, independent and impartial.

The time commitment is likely to be minimal, as and when required, based on experience of the last five years.  The role is not remunerated, but travel expenses are payable.



The qualifications for an Independent Person are that the person must not be:

  • A Member, Co-Opted Member or Officer of the Authority (or a Parish Council of which this Council is the principal authority)
  • A relative or close friend of the above
  • A Member, Co-Opted Member or Officer of the Authority (or the Parish Council of which the Authority is the principal authority) within five years of their prospective appointment.
