05/12/2018 WGC splash park plans move forwards

The redevelopment of Stanborough Park north took a major step forward last night (Tuesday, 4 December) as Cabinet approved outline proposals for a new purpose-built leisure facility.

Offering an array of different activities, early plans will feature different zones, including a new nautical themed splash park and play area, plus sports pitches, courts and an outdoor gym designed for all ages.

Plans also include better access to the existing high ropes facility, in addition to new places to relax, picnic and enjoy seasonal street food. Entrance to the park would remain free.

The council will now work towards developing designs and preparing a planning application to share more widely with the community. It is hoped the new £2.2m facility will open during the town's centenary year in 2020.

Cllr Terry Mitchinson, Executive Member for Leisure, Culture and Communications, said: "We're very happy to be in a position now to share our early concepts and move forwards in delivering the splash park residents have wanted for so long.

"The proposals are designed by local people, for local people and I'm especially pleased to see activities suited to all ages - from the very young to teenagers, adults and older people. Our ideas will transform an already popular leisure location into something very special indeed, with family fun, nature and wellbeing at its heart; I'm very much looking forward to unveiling detailed designs next year."

Leader of the Council, Cllr Tony Kingsbury, said: "We've explored a number of different options and are confident this is the right way to deliver on our commitment for local people. Residents will have a wide range of activities to enjoy on their doorstep, all throughout the year, but I am particularly looking forward to seeing a busy and lively wet play facility at Stanborough Park again come the summer months."
