How is my bill calculated?

Breakdown of your bill.

We work out your bill by multiplying the rateable value of your property by a figure known as the rate multiplier.

The rateable value of non-domestic property is fixed in most cases by an independant Valuation Officer of the Valuation Office Agency. All non-domestic property is revalued every five years. From 1 April 2005, the rateable value of a property represents its annual open market rental value as at 1 April 2003.

We work out your bill by multiplying the rateable value of your property by a figure known as the rate multiplier. The multiplier is normally changed each year to move in line with inflation. By law, the multiplier may not increase by more than the rate of inflation, except in the year of a revaluation when it is set at a level which will keep the amount raised in rates after the revaluation the same as before, plus inflation for that year, this is referred to as Transitional Scheme. The current multiplier will be displayed on the front of your Non-Domestic Rate bill.
