Advice on who can help if you believe your rateable value is incorrect

It is the duty of the Valuation Officer of the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), to compile and then maintain a rating list for the Welwyn Hatfield area.

If there has been a material change to your property, for example an extention please contact the Business Rate Unit who will arrange for your premises to be reassessed by the VOA.

If you believe the rateable value of your property to be incorrect, you will need to contact the VOA to lodge an appeal. Their address is the Valuation Office, St Peter’s House, 45 Victoria Street, St Albans, Herts AL1 3WZ. (Telephone: 01727 774700 or visit the VOA website

Appeals against rateable values can be made free of charge, and you do not have to be represented. However, ratepayers who do wish to be represented should be aware that members of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Institute of Revenues Rating and Valuation are qualified and are regulated by rules of professional conduct designed to protect the public from misconduct.

Before you employ a rating adviser, you should check that they have the necessary knowledge and expertise, as well as appropriate indemnity insurance.

Take great care and, if necessary, seek further advice before entering into any contract.
