What are Business Rates?
Business Rates is a tax on commercial properties
Business Rrates, otherwise known as non-domestic rates, is a tax on properties that are not used for domestic purposes, but commercial properties (for example, shops, factories and offices). If your property is used for both domestic and non-domestic purposes part of it will be assessed for Business Rates and the other part for Council Tax, for example a public house.
Welwyn Hatfield Council collects Business Rates on approximately 2300 business properties on behalf of Central Government. The money goes to a central fund and the Government then gives the Council a small proportion towards providing local services.
