Animal Licences

Licences are required to keep certain animals, and also for businesses that deal with animals.

  • Licence - animal movement

    In the aftermath of the Foot and Mouth outbreak a rigorous regime of licensing which controls the movement of a range of animals has been introduced. The most common animals whose movements have to be licensed are sheep, pigs and cows.

  • Licence - boarding animals

    The keeping and running of animal boarding establishments (Catteries and Kennels) is controlled by the Animal Boarding Establishments Act 1963.

  • Licence - Dog Breeding

    Establishments used for the breeding of dogs are controlled by The Breeding of Dogs Act 1973, The Breeding of Dogs Act 1991, The Breeding and Sale of Dogs (Welfare) Act 1999.

  • Licence - exotic, dangerous or wild animals

    The keeping of certain species of wild animals is controlled by the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976.

  • Licence - pet shop

    The keeping and running of a pet shop that sells animals is controlled by the Pet Animals Act 1951 (Amendment) Act 1983

  • Licence - riding establishment

    Licences to keep a riding establishment are issued under the Riding Establishments Acts 1964 and 1970.

  • Licence - zoo

    Zoos are regulated by the Council under the Zoo Licensing Act 1981.
