Community Safety

Living in a safe and secure environment is a high priority for everyone. That's why Welwyn Hatfield Council has committed in its five-year Corporate Plan to work with the police and other agencies to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.

Community Safety is about feeling safe, whether at home, in the street or at work. It relates to quality of life and being able to pursue and obtain the fullest benefits from your domestic, social and economic lives without interference from crime and disorder. Everyone has a part to play in community safety be they a business, a resident, a visitor, young or old because it is the concern of the whole community.

Fortunately, incidents of serious anti-social behaviour involving violence or intimidation are rare, but persistent nuisance is common and can make life miserable.

Everybody expects to live in a clean, safe environment. The council tries hard to make sure that this happens, working alongside other organisations and, most importantly, the people of Welwyn Hatfield.

Borough and district councils have a legal responsibility to work in partnership with county councils, the police, fire and health services to improve safety in their areas. Welwyn Hatfield has for a long time been a safe place to live, work and study and we aim to make it even safer.

Challenging the fear of crime

The chances that you or a member of your family will be a victim of crime are low. Crimes, and especially violent crimes, are still comparatively rare. Nevertheless, many people are frightened that they, or someone close to them, will be the victim of crime.

We can all help to bring crime down. Most crime is against property, not people, and not many crimes are carefully planned. Most crimes are committed on the spur of the moment - possessions left in a car or a door or window to a house left open. But you can reduce the risk by securing your home and car. This will also help the police by giving them more time to tackle serious crime. That's good for you and your family - because it makes your neighbourhood a safer place to live in.
