Welwyn Hatfield Council’s street wardens joined forces with students from Green Lanes Primary School, Hatfield and local PCSOs for an afternoon of litter picking on Wednesday 21 March.

The litter pick was organised by the council’s street wardens and the school’s Eco Council. The targeted areas for a clean up were the school’s playing fields and two nearby play areas, after children from the school identified these areas as in need of a spring clean.

Thirty-two children attended the litter pick, along with numerous parents. In all, twelve bags of rubbish, a fridge, a pram and a car bumper were removed from the sites.

Kevin Hornsey, Welwyn Hatfield Council’s Street Warden Manager, said: “The litter pick made such a difference to the area – it really is an impressive transformation. Everyone had a great day and I hope this will be the first of many similar events to be organised by the street wardens in partnership with local schools and groups.”

Street warden Neil Rider added: “I must thank the staff, students and parents from Green Lanes School for their enthusiastic support of this event. Thanks also go to the Co-op at Birchwood who supplied fruit and drinks for the busy workers, and to Serco who supplied safety equipment for all concerned.”
