Summer club makes art ‘Kool’ for kids

Children in the borough are set to benefit from a creative art club in Welwyn Garden City this summer holiday, thanks to a partnership between Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council and ArtsKool arts club.

The workshops will take place every Wednesday from 30 July to 27 August between 11am-3pm.  Children can get creative with a selection of activities and equipment including clay modelling, painting, drawing, paper mache and jewellery making in the Howard Centre on the ground floor near the escalators.

The drop in sessions, which are usually half an hour in length, give parents time to browse around the shops in peace, knowing their children are safe, having fun and hopefully creating a masterpiece!  All the tutors are qualified artists and are fully checked by the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB).

Cllr Mandy Perkins, Executive Member for Planning and Environmental Health, said: “This is the second year we will be working with ArtSkool art club in providing classes over the summer holidays, and I’m pleased to announce that the sessions will be free this year.

“Art can be a great way for children to learn, socially interact and play.  Research shows that children can develop key life skills through art, including problem solving, listening, tolerance and self confidence.”

“On average, more than 100 children attended each session last year.  The council and the Howard Centre have worked together to make the classes more accessible for parents this year.”
