Monday 16 June sees the launch of Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council’s new mixed can recycling service. Alongside our streetscene partner Serco, the council will start collecting food and drink cans along with aerosols and other metal containers from outside residents’ homes.
Simply place your mixed cans and glass items into your red kerbside box, or if you live in a flat with a mini-recycling centre, in the red wheelie bin provided. We will then collect them for recycling on the same day as your glass items.
Carly Walker, Waste Awareness Officer for Welwyn Hatfield BoroughCouncil said: “Not only does the scheme provide great environmental benefits, but it’s easy for residents to do. Recycling will benefit the community as it reduces the amount of rubbish we place into landfills and conserves precious raw materials.
“Recycling metal saves at least 75 per cent of the energy needed to make cans from raw materials and helps reduce the air and water pollution needed to create more cans.”
The types of metal suitable for recycling include:
• Aluminium drinks cans (fizzy drinks cans)
• Steel food tins (baked beans tins, corned beef tins, sardine tins, sweet tins)
• Clean foil/clean aluminium takeaway containers
• Aerosols
• Metal jar lids and metal bottle caps.
Clare Berry, Executive Member for Environment and Community, said: “The introduction of mixed can recycling was a result of residents’ feedback highlighting a demand for more items to be collected for recycling.
“We have listened to this feedback and have worked with partners in facilitating the collection mixed cans for recycling. We are dedicated to achieving a greener and cleaner borough that we can all to be proud of.”
Please do not include juice cartons, metallic sachets or food packets in the kerbside collections as we currently do not have the facilities to recycle these items. We will be unable to collect any mixed cans prior to Monday 16 June. For further advice on recycling in the borough, please visit the council’s website www.welhat.gov.uk.
