Welwyn Hatfield Council has committed to achieving Charter status for elected members by signing up to the East of England Regional Assembly (EERA) Charter for Elected Member Development.

The signing, which included elected members from all political parties, took place at the council chamber on Wednesday 20 September.

The charter has been developed in partnership with the Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA) and aims to develop elected members to help meet the needs of the local community.

Local authorities who participate in the scheme are required to sign up to the charter to demonstrate their commitment to improving performance through the development of their elected members. One way in which the charter will help to develop members is to establish their different training needs both individually and council wide.

Welwyn Hatfield Council is the first local authority in Hertfordshire to sign the charter agreement and will now develop an action plan to achieve charter status.
