Local golfers competed for the chance to lift a prestigious new trophy and helped two local good causes in a charity golf tournament hosted by the Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield Council.
Councillor John Hawkins held the tournament in aid of the local branches of Macmillan Cancer Support and the Alzheimer’s Society at Panshanger Golf Complex on Thursday 28 September.
The tournament was the Mayor’s first fund-raising event for his charities. They will benefit from his efforts during his year in office, which ends in May 2007.
Ten teams of four players competed in the tournament which together with a raffle raised over £1200 for the charity fund.
Councillor Hawkins donated and presented the Mayor’s Charity Golf Cup to the winning team from Aeromet International Plc; a manufacturer of aircraft parts based in Welwyn Garden City.
“I held the tournament because I understood that no civic head of Welwyn Hatfield Council had ever staged a golf competition before, despite the fact we are surrounded by many beautiful courses and have Nick Faldo as a local hero,” said Councillor Hawkins. It proved to be excellent day out and I would like to thank everyone that competed, or helped on the day.”
Other fundraising events planned by the Mayor during his year in Office are quiz nights, the first at the Jim Macdonald Centre in Hatfield on October 28th, a horse racing night, a music evening and a dinner dance.
Anyone interested in helping the Mayor raise money by attending any of his other events is asked to contact his secretary on 01707 357 000.
