19/01/2006 - Holocaust Memorial Day

Councillor John Hawkins, Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield Council, will lead the borough commemoration to mark the seventh Holocaust Memorial Day.

Holocaust Day, on 27 January, will mark the 62nd anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp and is intended to ensure that the horrendous crimes against humanity committed during the Holocaust are never forgotten and that its relevance for each new generation is understood.

Every year a different theme is announced to provide a focus for events and education in local and national commemorations, this year the theme is “The Dignity of Difference”.

A commemorative event will be held on Monday 29 January from 2pm until 3pm at the Reiss Memorial on Parkway in Welwyn Garden City. There will be a series of short readings and a release of symbolic memorial balloons, followed by a small reception in the council chamber at Campus West.
