Category Items

  • Ancient sites and monuments

Monuments are discrete, localized items of obvious historical interest, such as a known settlement, Victorian aqueduct, or Romano-British villa. They are reference points in the landscape. Many ancient monuments are scheduled and protected from damage under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act (1979).

  • Country conservation

We have been responsible for wildlife assets in the District for many years.

  • Countryside events

We have a number of events throughout the year.

  • Countryside - general information

Working closely with the local community, landowners and various environmental organisations, the council's Countryside Service aims to provide a countryside that is attractive and accessible to all sections of the community, while safeguarding and enhancing its wildlife, natural and historic features.

  • Countryside surveys

We undertake a number of surveys across the District.

  • Countryside Volunteers

Why not work with one of the groups of Voluntary Wardens at one of our countryside sites. As a volunteer you can take part in many different activities on your interests and abilities.

  • Countryside - walks

Why not take a walk around the many woodlands, nature reserves and paths in the district this Spring.

  • Management Projects

Following a successful consultation exercise we have started work on the woodland improvement works required to start bringing our two Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI's) Northaw Great Wood and Sherrardspark Wood up to favourable standard.

  • Ranger Services

The Council's Countryside Ranger Service manages the Countryside sites for everyone to enjoy. The Rangers carry out practical conservation work and environmental education in addition to organising events and activities.

  • The Commons Local Nature Reserve

The Commonswood Nature Watch manage this area of land off Howlands, Welwyn Garden City, which was acquired by Welwyn Hatfield Council in 1997 and has now been designated as a local nature reserve. The reserve has signed entrances and marked paths and is the home to an abundance of wildlife and rare habitats.

  • Woodland Management

The Forestry Advisory Service provides advice and information on trees, woodland and tree-related issues to the Council, partner organisations and the public.
