Countryside surveys
We undertake a number of surveys across the District.
Fulltime staff and volunteers have been involved for several years with regular wildlife surveys. These include butterfly transect surveys at Northaw Great Wood, Sherrardspark Wood and Danesbury, dragon fly surveys at wetland sites, annual fungi survey at Danesbury and bird ringing at The Commons. The work at The Commons aims to monitor farmland birds and records show that our management on that site for birds is successful. Specialist surveys of dormouse populations and rare butterflies have been undertaken in 2005, we have also undertaken a survey of lichens in the ruined churchyard in Ayot St Lawrence.
This information is passed every year to the Hertfordshire Biological Records Centre at Hertfordshire County Council.
