Illegal encampments

Environmental Health co-ordinate the council's response to illegal encampments (for example gypsies and travellers).

An encampment is defined in law as more than one caravan.    The onus is on the owner of the land on which the caravans are parked to obtain a court order of eviction.   Police are able to enforce certain legislation if the travellers are deemed to be offensive and prejudicial to public safety on the request of the land owner.

Reports of  caravans parked on land that is not a designated gypsy or traveller site can be made to Environmental Health on 01707 357242.

Hertfordshire County Council employ a Gypsy Liaison Officer to liaise with travellers within Hertfordshire. To contact them call 01707 897367.
