Hedge cutting

The council undertakes hedge cutting on all of its amenity hedges twice a year, between June and the end of October. We expect the first cut to be complete by the end of July. Prestige hedges in the town centres are cut three times per year in May, July and the last two weeks of September.

During the hedge cutting operations the growth will be removed to the point of the previous cut, all litter and debris will be removed from the hedge base, and all suckers and seedlings should be removed below ground level. All rubbish and arisings are removed from the site.

There are a number of hedges across the district that are designated Conservation Hedgerows. These hedges are only cut in February of alternate years.

The council does not undertake cutting of hedges in private gardens. If a hedge belonging to a private property is encroaching over a public highway, Hertfordshire Highways at the County Council should be contacted and they in turn will write to the property owner asking them to cut back the offending hedge.WGC town centre prestige

If you believe a council hedge is dangerous or causing a serious hazard, please contact us. An officer will visit the site and assess whether it is dangerous, and if so it will be cut within 10 working days. If the hedge is not cut within this time it has been judged as not dangerous or proving a hazard and will be cut on its normal schedule.

Tree officers can advise residents of the help available to deal with high hedges on boundaries. A fee is payable for any subsequent work. For information please contact us at contact-whc@welhat.gov.uk.
