Improvements to the roundabout in Stanborough Road (at its junction with the A6129) to make it more visually appealing have started.
Located on one of the main routes into Welwyn Garden City and near Stanborough lakes, the roundabout will be transformed into oasis that will include a 12ft boat as the centrepiece surrounded by a variety of plants.
Work started on Monday 12 March 2007 and will last for two weeks. Highways restrictions will be in place for the first six days of the project between 10am and 3pm.
As the site cannot be accessed on a regular basis and therefore watered, the landscaping includes dry plants that can sustain hot and long periods. The improvement works have been approved by Herts Highways.
Councillor Alan Franey, Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council’s Executive Member for Environment said: “The roundabout is currently poorly designed with overgrown heavy duty shrubs with no focal point. It has been considered an eyesore by some for a while, including the sponsors of the roundabout, Grange Motors Ltd. Doing something like this will help improve the entrance into Welwyn Garden City and using a boat aptly links the roundabout to the nearby park.”
