Welwyn Hatfield Council has been praised by the Government Office for the East of England (GO-East) for continuing success in reducing energy consumption and Carbon Dioxide emissions in the borough.

Under the Home Energy Conservation Act 1996 (HECA) by 2011 the borough must reduce CO2 emissions from homes by 25%, as set out in the council’s HECA strategy. The council is bang on target – since 1996 C02 emissions in dwellings in the borough have reduced by 18.15%. By 2010 – a year ahead of schedule – emissions should be reduced by 25%.

A recent letter from GO-East commended the council for the promotional and publicity work about home energy conservation conducted within the borough.

Activities have included promotional roadshows at a variety of locations designed to publicise information on grant schemes. In addition, an exhibition on renewable energy was held at Mill Green Museum, which was well attended by many families from the borough. Various other activities, including a play by children at Holwell Primary school on the consequences of Global Warming, were also held. Officers are now working on similar events for this year.
