Serco, Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council’s Streetscene Services partner, recently invited Welwyn Hatfield primary school pupils to participate in a poster competition to help encourage a sense of pride and responsibility among pupils.
Children were asked to design a poster to discourage littering and inspire residents young and old to keep the borough clean by taking their litter home or using street litter bins.
The competition was split into two age categories, five to eight years and nine to eleven years. Serco received more than 100 entries from children at schools across Welwyn Hatfield.
The five to eight years age group was won by Ruby Draper, a pupil at St Philip Howard Catholic Primary in Hatfield. Her poster, giving the message “Look after Hertfordshire, don’t litter!” was chosen for its bright and colourful design and clear message about not littering.
The winner of the nine to eleven category was Harry Lane from Homerswood Primary School, Welwyn Garden City. His poster took a fun stance on discouraging litter by suggesting people make a bin in the shape of a basketball hoop and then score goals with litter!
