Welwyn Hatfield Council has started refurbishment work on the arena area of The Campus, Welwyn Garden City.
Most of the area to be worked on is over 70 years old and the structure and surface finishes are showing signs of deterioration. There is no evidence of any previous refurbishment work so significant repair works are now required.
At a cost of £170,000, the planned improvements include repaving the old concrete using resin bonded shingle, cleaning, refurbishing and lighting the monument, uplighting the trees, lighting the arena terrace, replanting the hedges and adding new litter bins and benches (similar to those near the Parkway fountain).
The work will be completed by 23 March 2007, subject to the weather.
Councillor Richard Smith, Executive Member for Resources, said: “Improvements to the arena are greatly needed. The planned enhancements will not only address the construction issues – at the moment there are various loose slabs that could be a potential hazard – but also improve the landscaping and lighting. By the spring, residents and visitors will be able to enjoy a cleaner, brighter and safer arena.”
