Noise Nuisance

We receive a large number of noise complaints every year. These complaints are about a wide range of noise sources including noisy neighbours or their animals, pubs, clubs and other places of entertainment, construction sites, commercial and industrial buildings.

We have a duty to investigate noise complaints but we have to work within the terms of the law, so some types of noise disturbance, such as road traffic noise or people's unreasonable behaviour as part of their daily lives, cannot be dealt with. The law that deals with noise nuisance is the Environmental Protection Act 1990. This gives the environmental health powers to deal with noise nuisance. Useful information is available in the leafletĀ dealing with Noise & Nuisance.

We also provide a consultancy service to the planning department. This aims to prevent problems occurring at the planning stage rather than once the building(s) are finished and in operation.
