New mixed can collections
From Monday 16 June 2008, Welwyn Hatfield Council and Serco will begin to collect mixed cans at the kerbside.
FAQs
What are mixed cans?
| Yes please | No thanks |
|---|---|
| Aluminium cans | Juice cartons |
| Steel cans/tins | Crisp packets |
| Clean foil/clean aluminium takeaway containers | Metallic sachets eg, cat food |
| Aerosols | Any other metal |
If the cans/tins have food or drink residues on them, please give them a rinse and remove paper labels. This will help avoid odours, wasps and flies.
How will they be collected?
From the 16 June, the red recycling containers will be for glass and cans. If you have a red recycling box, we will collect your cans in this along with the glass. If you live in a flat and have a mini-recycling centre we will collect cans in the red glass wheelie bin.
What should I do if my cans and glass will not fit in my recycling box?
Excess recyclables can be presented in carrier bags. For safety reasons, it would be preferable if excess cans are placed in carrier bags instead of glass.
How will the glass and cans be recycled if they are mixed together?
The recyclables will be taken to a new outlet where they have the machinery to separate glass and metal, and then forward them on individually for recycling. Paper will still be collected, stored and tipped separately.
When can I begin to put my box out for collection with cans in it?
Please check your recycling calendar (a new one is due to be delivered at the end of May/early June), however the collection of mixed cans from recycling boxes will commence on or after, Monday 16 June. Please do not present any cans before this date as it will contaminate the glass.
When is my collection day?
Please see the household waste and recycling collection schedule page.
Does the council have any plans for alternate weekly refuse collections?
Currently the council are not considering reducing the frequency of refuse collection.
