Yellow Pages

Some paper reprocessors do not accept Yellow Pages directories for recycling. This is due to the length of time the ink has been on the paper and the subsequent difficulty in removing the ink during the recycling process.

Additionally the yellow dye makes the paper less desirable to reprocessors who wish to produce newsprint.

Therefore, in conjunction with Yellow Pages and the Woodland Trust, Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council participates in the Yellow Woods Challenge. This is a simple, educational and fun scheme whereby school children bring old Yellow Pages directories into school for recycling. The schools compete locally and the ones that recycle the most directories per pupil win cash prizes. For every pound Yellow Pages awards to schools, it gives a matching pound to the Woodland Trust.

Last years winners were St Philip Howard Primary School in Hatfield who won a £300 cash prize for collecting eleven old directories per pupil. The school went on to win a further £1,000 in the UK Finals 2005 and were invited to Conkers, a children’s activity centre in Derbyshire, to receive their cash prize and certificate from Kirk, the campaign mascot.

Please note, the collection of yellow pages for recycling is seasonal. The Welwyn Hatfield directory is distributed in the spring and we therefore operate the Yellow Woods Challenge at this time. Unfortunately we are unable to collect yellow pages at other times of the year.
