Tree Warden Scheme
The Welwyn Hatfield's branch of the Tree Wardens is two years old. We continue to have 80 Wardens who regularly let us know what is happening in their neighbourhood.
What do Tree Wardens do?
A Tree Warden could help us by:
Gathering information
We have a survey of the street trees in the borough but help from Wardens in keeping this record up to date would be invaluable. As well as finding out how we work, Tree Wardens would become aware of the threats to trees and realise that they can help by bringing this information to our attention.
Being a local contact for the council
Many people who require information about trees do not know who to talk to here. The Tree Wardens, by knowing us and how we work may well be able to help and can act as a clearing house by feeding information rapidly to the community, improving communications.
Helping with practical projects
Tree Wardens might like to spend time organising practical tree projects. Acting as a catalyst is an important role for us here, as Wardens alone might not think to tackle a large project, but together we can achieve it. Tree Wardens in other parts of the Country have successfully set up seedling tree nurseries in conjunction with local schools, have formed local tree care committees, have organised their own community tree walks and tree planting events.
Protecting trees by being our eyes and ears
Tree Wardens can provide a vital service by telling us about a tree they think might have a disease or watching for infringements of Tree Preservation Orders. Wardens notice vandalism and can help repair small scale damage. They can look out for trees that start to show signs of ill health or are becoming dangerous through decay and report back to us.
Training will be offered
For those that are interested we will be organising short training sessions on all aspects of trees in venues across the district on days and times to suit those who are keen to join in. Should we be fortunate and build up a steady band of Tree Wardens we can mix the training offered as the years go by to keep up the interest and widen skills.
Keep in touch by coming to regular meetings
After Easter we will be publicising our 2007-08 calendar of events. This will include talks and visits locally to increase your knowledge of the trees in the Borough.
