Supported Accommodation
The Council runs a number of supported housing schemes for people over 60 across Welwyn Hatfield. These provide self-contained accommodation in flats and bungalows, where residents have support from a Scheme Manager and access to a range of support services.
There are four different categories of supported housing:
- Supported Schemes
- Supported/Neighbourhood Schemes
- Neighbourhood Schemes
- Extra Care Supported Housing
SupportedSchemes
These have a Scheme Manager working on-site during the day serving an average of 60 homes. Many have been specially built for older people and have extra facilities such as laundries, guest rooms and communal halls.
Supported/Neighbourhood Schemes
With an average of 90 homes each, these schemes have a Scheme Manager working from within a group of supported flats and bungalows whilst also providing a service to a number of homes outside the central group. Communal facilities may be available for scheme residents.
Communal facilities
These are not available at all schemes, but neighbouring schemes often share facilities and arrange joint events with the aim of providing companionship. The Scheme Manager can be contacted for more details.
- Communal halls
- These are an ideal place to meet people and hold social events. All communal halls are equipped with kitchens.
- Laundry rooms
- These are equipped with washing machines and tumble dryers, which are for the use of residents and their home carers.
- Since home carers are on tight schedules we ask residents to let them use the machines first if the laundry is busy.
- Transport
- A service is provided to that residents can get out on trips and to lunch clubs and community centres in the area.
- Scheme Managers can advise on transport available for residents.
- Guest rooms
- Some schemes have guest rooms, which are furnished for friends and relatives to stay overnight. Enquiries and bookings should be made through the Scheme Manager.
- Shared TV licence
- Some residents may not need to buy their own television licence. Our Welfare Services team are able to advise where communal licences apply.
- Communal heating
- In some schemes communal heating is provided. This is charged for weekly with the rent.
Neighbourhood Schemes
Averaging around 90 homes each, these schemes have a Scheme Manager either living in the neighbourhood or working from a scheme office.
Extra Care Supported Housing
Extra Care Supported Housing combines supported accommodation with a higher level of support for older people. The aim is to maximise a person's independence by providing individually tenanted, self-contained accommodation with intensive home care and support on an "as and when" basis, which is tailored to the person's needs.
Our Extra Care service is located at our Chilton Green sheltered scheme where some of the flats have been adapted for people who need more help to maintain their independence. Welwyn Hatfield Council work in partnership with Hertfordshire County Council's Adult Care Services to provide support services on a daily basis. There are carers on site from 7am to 9pm every day, who can help with tasks such as bathing, dressing, laundry, preparation of light meals and housework, depending on the requirements of individual tenants.
All homes of elderly residents living in any type of sheltered accommodation are connected via an alarm system to our Communications Centre.
