Cemeteries, burials and memorials
We provide and maintain two cemeteries within Welwyn Hatfield.
Any person or organisation, including funeral directors or memorial masons, wishing to undertake a burial, memorial work, interment or scattering of ashes must obtain appropriate permission. Contact us for more information. Opening hours [6KB] - both cemeteries are open for visitors 365 days a year, including all Bank Holidays and Christmas Day.
The council recently updated their standards and regulations [200KB] in relation to the following cemeteries from April 2010. Welwyn Hatfield Lawn Cemetery Once called Welwyn Hatfield District Cemetery, this is a lawn style cemetery that is open for burials and interment of ashes. As well as traditional graves, we have a garden of remembrance and memorial gardens where ashes may be buried under roses and in memorial plots.
- All grave plots are purchased at the time of burial.
- It is not possible to pre-purchase plots at this cemetery.
- New grave plots are for 75 years from the date on the deed of ownership for that plot.
- This is a lawn cemetery, therefore, no kerb sets are allowed. A kerb set is edging that protrudes from the concrete plinths and lies on top of the grave space.
- There is a chapel available to hire for services. The chapel is non-denominational and suitable for non-religious ceremonies.
Hatfield Hyde Cemetery Hatfield Hyde Cemetery is closed for new burials, but interments are still carried out in pre-purchased plots. A new memorial garden is available for the interment of ashes.
Book servicesServices for both cemeteries may be booked through local funeral directors or the borough council. Contact us for more information. Other borough cemeteriesWe are also responsible to maintain the grounds at St Luke's and St Etheldreda's cemeteries in Hatfield. Burials no longer take place at these cemeteries and our responsibilities only extend to grass and shrub cutting and minor maintenance issues.
