Welwyn Hatfield Sports Awards 2010

The Sports Awards recognise and reward sporting successes and achievements in the borough. Over 50 nominations were received this year, covering 15 different sports: athletics, football, badminton, cycling, basketball, cricket, running, table tennis, tennis, gymnastics, swimming, disabled sport, rugby, hockey and canoeing.

The ten categories are:

  • School team of the year - U13 Girls Table Tennis - Monks Walk School, and Year 8 team Tennis - Queenswood School
  • School teacher of the year - Brendon Mallon PE & Tag Rugby - St Michaels School, Woolmer Green
  • School pupil of the year - Bethany Hayward, Cycling - Monks Walk School
  • Young leader of the year - Aaron Hemsley, Football – King George Football Club
  • Sports person of the year - Richard Charlesworth, Swimming
  • Club of the year - Herts Phoenix Athletics Club
  • Team of the year - Welwyn Warriors Girls Team, Girls Rugby - Welwyn Rugby Football Club
  • Coach of the year - Nick Juba, Swimming
  • Contribution to disability sport - Peter Stannard, Disability Multi Access - Activate Forum
  • Service to sport - Alan Smith, Hockey.

A special award was presented to Jodie Williams by BBC commentator and former 100m hurdler Stuart Storey. The award recognises Jodie's Outstanding Achievement in Sport.

The winners received their prizes at a glittering awards ceremony, at the Campus West Theatre on Thursday 11 February 2010.

The event was organised by the council through Community Chest funding, alongside the Welwyn Hatfield Times and the Welwyn Hatfield Sports and Physical Activity Alliance.
