12/02/2010 Borough Sports Awards Winners 2010On Thursday 11 February, local sporting stars joined councillors and officers from Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council for the annual Welwyn Hatfield Sports Awards.The Sports Awards recognise and reward sporting successes and achievements in the borough. Over 50 nominations were received this year, covering 15 different sports: athletics, football, badminton, cycling, basketball, cricket, running, table tennis, tennis, gymnastics, swimming, disabled sport, rugby, hockey and canoeing. Ten awards were presented. The winners were:
A special award was presented to Jodie Williams forOutstanding Achievement in Sport. The winners were presented their trophies at a glittering awards ceremony last night (Thursday 11 February) at the Campus West Theatre. Speaking at the event, Councillor Langley said: "Congratulations to everyone receiving an award, it truly is an amazing achievement and you all deserve it. I hope this inspires you all to achieve more next year, and inspires others to follow in your footsteps." Councillor John Dean, who chaired the judging panel, said: "The standard of the nominations was very high and, from the lists of achievements of each of the nominees, I think we can safely say that they are continuing the great tradition of outstanding performance, sportsmanship and dedication that has been the hallmark of previous winners." The event was organised by the council, through ward councillors and Community Chest funding, alongside the Welwyn Hatfield Times and the Welwyn Hatfield Sports and Physical Activity Alliance.
