09/04/2010 Extra sports activities for young peopleWelwyn Hatfield Borough Council, in partnership with Herts Sports Partnership, has been successful in securing £25,000 from Sport England to run a timetable of sport activities for young people. The activities will run for a whole year and take place in school term time. The first stint will start in late April with some sessions being free. The funding has been allocated by the borough council to Gosling Sports Park, Child UK, Youth Connexions, Finesse Leisure, Herts Sports Village, Apex Sport, Badminton England and Activate Forum and Welwyn Rugby Club, to manage the programme which will include a wide range of sports. The provisional programme from late April looks set to include:
The initiative forms part of Herts Sports Partnership which looks to encourage 11-19 year olds who already have some interest in sports to increase their participation through a programme of after school activities. A programme of sport activity, called Livewire, was set up by the partnership three years ago. Matt Rayner, Youth and Sports Partnerships Manager at Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, who was responsible for the bid, said: "It's a fantastic amount of money to be given, which has enabled us to work with some great local organisations. We want to give young people a reason to get outdoors, have fun and meet new friends. "We're keen to ensure that teenagers from lower income families have more opportunities to take part, which is why a number of activities will be free. We don't want the cost of lessons or equipment preventing young adults to brush up on skills they may already possess or discover new sporting talents!" The programme of activities, once finalised after the Easter school holidays, will be advertised on the council's website: www.welhat.gov.uk and channelmogo: www.channelmogo.org.
