09/04/2010 Extra sports activities for young people

Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, in partnership with Herts Sports Partnership, has been successful in securing £25,000 from Sport England to run a timetable of sport activities for young people.

The activities will run for a whole year and take place in school term time. The first stint will start in late April with some sessions being free.

The funding has been allocated by the borough council to Gosling Sports Park, Child UK, Youth Connexions, Finesse Leisure, Herts Sports Village, Apex Sport, Badminton England and Activate Forum and Welwyn Rugby Club, to manage the programme which will include a wide range of sports.

The provisional programme from late April looks set to include:

  • An after-school tennis club in secondary schools for 11-16 year olds
  • A multi sport club every Friday night at Moneyhole Park, Welwyn Garden City for 13-19 year olds
  • Climbing every Wednesday afternoon at Herts Sports Village
  • Girls rugby for 13 year olds and above and mixed ability rugby for 8 year old plus on an evening each week
  • Badminton at Gosling Sports Park for 7-17 year olds
  • After school sport clubs for 8-11 year olds in the villages
  • After school cricket club in local schools for 12-17 year olds
  • After school football clubs for 8-11 year olds.

The initiative forms part of Herts Sports Partnership which looks to encourage 11-19 year olds who already have some interest in sports to increase their participation through a programme of after school activities. A programme of sport activity, called Livewire, was set up by the partnership three years ago.

Matt Rayner, Youth and Sports Partnerships Manager at Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, who was responsible for the bid, said: "It's a fantastic amount of money to be given, which has enabled us to work with some great local organisations. We want to give young people a reason to get outdoors, have fun and meet new friends.

"We're keen to ensure that teenagers from lower income families have more opportunities to take part, which is why a number of activities will be free. We don't want the cost of lessons or equipment preventing young adults to brush up on skills they may already possess or discover new sporting talents!"

The programme of activities, once finalised after the Easter school holidays, will be advertised on the council's website: www.welhat.gov.uk and channelmogo: www.channelmogo.org.
