Craft Courses and Workshops

A variety of workshops, courses and taster sessions are available in the beautiful setting of Mill Green in subjects as diverse as wood turning, photography, quilting, bee keeping etc. They are all friendly, practical and taught by experts. A programme of FREE craft demonstrations is run on Sundays and some Bank Holiday Mondays throughout the summer months to coincide with the serving of Cream Teas.

Four Day Course

Tuesday 12th to Friday 15th May

10am to 4.30pm each day

 

Following on from our taster course, you can build your skills and also your confidence on our 4 day beginners workshop and take home some beautiful pieces. The course is based in our garage workshop under the expert guidance of Colin Smith, a gifted wood turning craftsman.

Each wood working student will be given instruction on tool maintenance and have the use of their own dedicated lathe throughout the course. Over the four days the students will produce a turned bowl as well as some spindle works in the form of candlesticks or alternative pieces using the same technique.

 Lunch and refreshments will be provided as well as all of the equipment and materials.

The importance of visual literacy in the new curriculum.

Join children's author and illustrator James Mayhew for a stimulating and creative day exploring the benefits of visual literacy across the new curriculum and in engaging children of different abilities. With an overall theme of landscape and environment, discover how illustration can embrace all subjects, through research, observation and experiment.

James Mayhew is the award winning author and illustrator of the Katie books, which have been introducing children all over the world to art for more than 25 years.

Course being run by the School Grounds Company in association with Mill Green Mill and Museum.

Willow Working

 

Chicken Workshop

10am to 4pm

Hazel Godfrey will introduce you to the basic skills for small-scale sculpting with willow. At the end of the day you should have acquired the techniques to make your own sculptures.  The session will centre around each participant constructing their own willow chicken.  To allow for preparation of materials please book by 20th March.

Bring a packed lunch and some sharp secateurs, if you have them.  All other equipment will be supplied.

Plant Supports Workshop

Create interest and height in your borders, a willow wigwam will support sweet peas or clematis. Suitable for beginners, Hazel Godfrey will teach you simple and useful techniques to make a useful structure for your garden.  Wigwam approx 5'. To allow for preparation of materials please book by 3rd April.

Dragonfly Workshop

Learn to make a beautiful willow dragonfly for you wall or garden in this beginners willow workshop.  Hazel Godfrey will teach you techniques for a basic weave, spiral plait, and random weave.  To allow for preparation of materials please book by 15th May.

Introduction to Jewellery Making

On this beginner's introduction to jewellery making workshop you will:
  • Learn to use beading wire and beads to make bracelets and necklaces
  • Be taught about the different types of beads and components used
  • Discover which tools you need to get started, and when and how to use them
  • Learn some design tips which you can use in the future in your own bracelet and necklace designs
  • Learn where to buy materials and equipment

What is included:

  • All materials and beads needed and use of tools on the day
  • Two pieces of jewellery which you will make and take home at no additional charge (usually one necklace and one bracelet)
  • An information pack to take home, detailing the basic techniques, materials guide, list of recommended suppliers and information sources
