Work Experience

Work experience offers students of today the opportunity to prepare for the challenges of tomorrow.

The council works in conjunction with the Hertfordshire Careers Services (HCS) for all our work experience placements.

The schools we currently support are:

  • Bishops Hatfield Girls
  • Chancellors
  • Monks Walk
  • Onslow St Andrey's
  • Sherrardswood
  • Sir Frederic Osborn
  • Stanborough

It has been agreed with HCS that students will carry out office administrative work. Students will undertake real tasks that give them an idea of the work carried out by the service area they are working in. If students are required to keep a log book during the placement we ensure time is allocated for this, as well as completing the employer assessment for the student.

Role of Parents and Guardians

If a school has approached the council regarding a placement for a student this will be notified to the parent/guardian who will often be required to give their written consent. The parent/guardian will be provided with information about arrangements and will know how to contact the school if their son or daughter reports a problem regarding the placement. All students are invited to visit the workplace prior to commencement and parents are welcome to accompany the student.

Annually HCS assess the ability of a work experience placement provider to ensure a student's health, safety and welfare whilst on work experience. Health and Safety information is passed on to both parent and student.

Insurance Arrangements

Our employee insurance covers all work experience students.

Working Arrangements

The Working Time Regulations 1998 apply to students on work experience. However, the number and pattern of hours worked is normally agreed between the Council, the school and the student. A working week is Monday to Friday covering 37 hours. Under no circumstances should students work outside any hours specified by legislation. Five days is currently seen as the normal length of work experience but up to ten days can be arranged.

If you are a student seeking your own placement or no longer at school please contact Human Resources to discuss work experience.
