Can someone contact the council on my behalf?

You can request someone to deal with your account in writing.

Our primary concern is to protect the information that we hold on you, which is governed by the Data Protection Act 1998.

In day to day dealings, we will only supply information to you about your account, once we are satisfied that we are dealing with the person named on the account.

Therefore, it is important that if you contact us, you have your account number to hand. (This is always quoted on any letters we send out).

If you wish us to discuss your account with another person acting on your behalf, we must have either written authority from you to do so, or if they call/visit the council, you must be present to supply verbal consent for the Council Tax officer to discuss your account.

The Data Protection Act 1998

The Data Protection Act 1998 extended people's rights to find out information held about them on computer databases. It also sets out how this data should be used and lays down eight principles that must be met by organisations, or individuals, who hold and use personal data. Please visit our Data Protection Act page for more information.
