Business Rates

Business Rates (otherwise known as non-domestic rates) is a tax on properties that are used for commercial purposes (for example, shops, factories and offices)

If your property is used for both domestic and non-domestic purposes, part of it will be assessed for Business Rates and the other part for Council Tax, for example a public house.

It is usually the organisation or person who is using the premises who is liable to pay the Business Rates. However, there are exceptions to this rule.

Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council collects Business Rates on approximately 2,600 business properties on behalf of Central Government. The money goes to a central fund and the Government then gives the council a small proportion towards providing local services.

You can find out more about business rates by visiting the government's website.
