Equal Opportunities

"Our mission is to work actively towards the elimination of barriers that prevent equality within the district, addressing equality of opportunity and access and individual needs in order to encourage the development of opportunities for all Council employees, residents and service users"

Through Employment

It is the aim of the Council to ensure that people from all sections of the community have genuine equal opportunities to gain employment with the Council in all service areas and to progress within the Council's employment at all levels. The Council will take appropriate and reasonable steps to remove all barriers and obstacles that may exist to such equal opportunities.

The Council policy is to ensure that no job applicant or employee receives less favourable treatment on the grounds of sex, colour, race, nationality, ethnic or racial origins, marital status, trade union activity, age, political or religious beliefs or is disadvantaged by conditions or requirements which cannot be shown to be justified.

Through Service Delivery

The Council is committed to the provision of high quality service in a way that is accessible to everyone.  It will continue to consult the people of Welwyn Hatfield over equality issues and will plan an active enabling role with the private sector, voluntary groups and other agencies in the promotion of equal opportunity policies and practices.

Welwyn Hatfield Council is committed to equality of opportunity, both as an employer and a service provider. The Council recognises that the Council's equal opportunity policy is a foundation of the Council's vision, and underpins everything the Council represents and aims to achieve.

Equality & Diversity Scheme

Welwyn Hatfield Council has launched it's new Equality and Diversity scheme.  This new scheme supersedes the previous Race Equality scheme published by the Council in October 2002.  The new scheme has been extended to encompass all six equalities strands (race, disability, gender, religion, sexual orientation and age) and outlines the Council's commitment to the promotion of equality and the celebration of diversity, and gives direction on how this commitment will be delivered.
