Access for everyone
For visitors with special access needs.
We are committed to making our activities, premises and exhibitions accessible to everyone. Please let us know if you have any special needs in advance of your visit and we will do everything we can to help.
Here is a table of our standard accessible facilities and known access issues for people with disabilities.
| Accessible toilet | Mill Green Museum ground floor. Welwyn Roman Baths from summer 2007 |
| Lifts | Mill Green Museum from ground floor to study area (used for talks and some children's activities) |
| Courtesy wheelchairs | Mill Green and Welwyn Roman Baths |
| Disabled parking spaces | Mill Green and Welwyn Roman Baths |
| Guidance in person | Mill Green and Welwyn Roman Baths |
| Large print leaflets | All our text is in larger font sizes in displays wherever possible. Some large print leaflets about the site are also available onsite and large print leaflets can be sent in advance by request. |
| Magnifiers | Available on loan from reception at both sites |
| Baby Changing facilities | Mill Green Museum ground floor. Welwyn Roman Baths from summer 2007 |
| Baby nursing rooms | Available on request on most days unless very busy |
| Clipboards, pens and paper | Mill Green and Welwyn Roman Baths reception desks |
| Hearing loop system | Mill Green and Welwyn Roman Baths reception desks. Also on during all talks and lectures (NB: Mill Green reception desk system currently under repair) |
Mill Green Mill Ground floor | The floor is concrete and is a little uneven due to its age but is safe and accessible to wheelchairs and walking aids when used appropriately. There is a background "rumbling" noise when milling which may affect the clarity of hearing aids. |
Mill Green Mill stairs | The stairs have two handrails and are a single modern flight of wooden stairs. Unfortunately no lift is available, because the Mill is a listed historic building |
Mill Green Mill first floor | A video of the mill first floor is available for those unable to access the stairs. |
Mill Green Museum | All public displays are on the ground floor. The entrance floor is solid and some other floors are wooden. There are some internal ramps. The front door has a low threshold due to the age of the listed building but this is not higher than 25mm. No toilets have thresholds. An accessible ramp provides an alternative threshold-free entrance. |
Mill Green Jubilee Gardens | All paths, tables and benches are designed to be wheelchair-friendly. Benches have wheelchair spaces or 'parking' areas close beside them. Some planting is in raised beds for the enjoyment of wheelchair users. |
Mill Green stores | The stores are situated in a new building constructed to DDA requirements. Doors are wide for wheelchair users and floors are smooth, even and solid. A lift is available, with tactile buttons. Handrail colours are contrasting with walls. Stairs are constructed of metal with ‘tactile’ treads. |
Welwyn Roman Baths general access | Welwyn Roman baths are approached along a tarmac path wide enough for wheelchairs. This has a gentle downward gradient towards the bath house vault. The entrance to the vault is approximately 100 m from the disabled parking space due to the topography of the site. |
Welwyn Roman baths interior | Light levels are lower than in a standard home or office. Staff can usually read labels aloud, for those who desire this. The monument is safely enclosed within a barrier with a continuous handrail. The area around the monument is wheelchair accessible and level after the access ramp. Chairs are available on which to pause during the visit. |
Welwyn Roman baths toilets | Two accessible toilets are available, with left and right hand transfer available. Please note that as the site has no mains water, these are modern hygenic waterless composting toilets. Alcohol gel is provided for hand sanitising. |
