Mill Green Mill, where we produce organic stone ground flour, is a great place to see ancient water-powered technology still in use today. The River Lea powers the water wheel and you can see how this is transferred to the mill stones by gears and cogs. The entire milling process is carefully explained.

At Welwyn Roman Baths your class will be able to find out how the Romans bathed without soap but still got clean.  Preserved under the A1M in a tunnel this bathhouse was part of a large Roman villa; when booked by you for a school visit your class will have this exciting site to themselves.

Each site can be visited on its own or you can choose to combine your visit with a taught session at Mill Green Museum and Mill. The bathhouse at Welwyn is five miles to the north of Mill Green but many schools combine the Romans at Home handling session with a visit to the bathhouse, which makes a great Roman school trip, with the extra fun of seeing a working watermill because all visitors to Mill Green must see its star attraction! The taught sessions have been tailored to meet the needs of the national curriculum but we are very flexible and working together we can adapt sessions to the needs of your class.  We also fit our taught sessions and visits to either site to the requirements of children and adults with special educational needs.

Tell me more about your taught sessions

Here's what one teacher told us:

"Thank you for a fabulous visit to the Roman Baths and Museum (Mill Green). The students had a wonderful time and learnt lots. The teachers really enjoyed themselves too. One said it wasn’t really like a school trip it was so relaxing!”

How to Book

You will need to ensure that the day you want to visit either or both sites is free: telephone 01707 271362 to find out.  Sarah Adamson the Education Officer will be able to advise you and help you to plan your visit. Our booking procedure is simple but we ask you to return the booking form, which we will send you. By doing so you will formally confirm your visit.

How much does it cost?

A visit just to the Mill at Mill Green is free but a donation towards the ongoing restoration of the mill is very welcome. You can if you wish spend the whole day with us by visiting the mill and museum and then organising your own activities using the site of the mill as inspiration.  All the taught sessions are £60, with the exception of the Little Red Hen session, and are for a maximum of 35 children. The Little Red Hen session costs £75 and is for a maximum of 30 children.

A visit to the Roman bathhouse at Welwyn costs £1 per child. We open the site up especially for school groups and it is your site for the duration of your visit. We have a minimum charge of £30 (£25 for Welwyn Hatfield schools) and we suggest that you visit with one class at a time. If you want to bring a larger group please discuss the details of this with the Education Officer.

Where can we eat lunch?

At Mill Green we have picnic benches in the Jubilee garden where you can eat lunch if the weather is fine.  We do have a small cottage room available for schools to use but it can only accommodate a limited number of people and so if a school needs to use it we stagger parts of the visit to allow the children to eat in the dry.

There are no lunch facilities at the Welwyn Roman Baths.

Follow up work and feedback

A visit to either of our sites provides all sorts of stimuli for follow up work back at school.  Occasionally we see some wonderful work based on school visits to us and we would like to see more. Or better still we would love to display it here.  We also welcome feedback on every visit and we are very grateful for every evaluation form returned to us.  The best feedback of all is when children return with family members to show them what they have learnt.

“I liked it so much I came back with my Grandad very interesting”

What is expected of Teachers?

Teachers will be responsible for the control and supervision of their group whilst on either site.  We advise any teacher bringing children to either site to make a preliminary visit.  Sarah Adamson, the Education officer is usually available during the week but if you can only visit at the weekend the Roman bathhouse is open 2 – 5pm (or dusk if earlier) every Saturday and Sunday (closed in December) If you tell the member of staff on duty that you are bringing a school party you will be let in free of charge. The Mill and Museum at Mill Green is free of charge and is open 2 – 5pm every Saturday and Sunday.

A Roman day out

Why not visit Verulamium Museum and the Roman baths at Welwyn for a fabulous Roman day out in Hertfordshire. Life in the Roman countryside (Welwyn) would have been very different from life in the town (Verulamium) and by visiting both sites on the same day your pupils will be able to compare the two directly. For some teachers visiting both sites on the same day makes perfect sense, especially if your journey to or from Verulamium takes you past Welwyn. If you want to consider a joint visit we suggest that you book it at the same time as you book Verulamium Museum. If you have any queries about visiting both sites on the same day please do speak to Sarah Adamson, who will be happy to advise you.

School Loans

We have a selection of loan boxes available to schools:

To book please call 01707 271362 and speak to Rosemary Lee-Bapty (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) or leave a message with a member of the Museum’s staff and Rosemary will call you back.

We have produced four education packs to support different areas of the curriculum.  £6.50 plus 50p p & p
