Planning Portal

The Planning Portal is the UK Government's planning resource. Use this site to learn about the planning system, what needs planning permission, apply for planning permission, find out about development near you, appeal against a planning decision and research the latest government policy

The Planning Portal is available to you in association with the council's Planning Service.   The Planning Portal offers a wide range of services and guidance on the planning system.

Guide to the Planning process - offers a brief introduction to the Planning system and some explanation of what planning is for and why it is important to us all. This section of the Planning Portal is intended for both householders and businesses. It explains why planning controls are necessary and how decisions are made.

Online application - you can submit your application electronically using the Portal.  You can pay online or post a cheque to accompany your online application. You can also use the online applications service to produce a site location plan to accompany your application.

Appeals - offers guidance on how to appeal against a planning refusal, or if you application is not determined within a set period.

Research - the research section of the Portal is intended to help professional planners, lawyers, students, academics and others with an in-depth interest in town and country planning. It includes the Government's PPGs and other guidance.

The Planning Portal can give general advice on whether planning permission or building regulation consent is required to carry out works to your home. Please note, however, it does not contain advice about the Welwyn Garden City Estate Management Scheme which can be found on this website or homes where the rights to carry out works without planning permission have been removed.
