Further Changes to the Regional Spatial Strategy for the East of England (East of England Plan)

The final East of England Plan was published by the Government Office for the East of England in May 2008 and provides strategic regional planning policies. It is the Regional Spatial Strategy for the whole of the East of England region (Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire). At the strategic level, the East of England Plan will guide the development of housing, transport, waste and mineral extraction, economic development and sport and recreation across the region to 2021.

Key points in the East of England Plan are:

  • · Welwyn Garden City and Hatfield have been jointly designated as a Key Centre for Development and Change.
  • · A minimum of 10,000 additional dwellings must be built in Welwyn Hatfield between 2001 and 2021.
  • · Strategic green belt reviews in Hertfordshire are needed for Welwyn Hatfield, Stevenage, Dacorum, St Albans and to the north of Harlow in East Hertfordshire. The review must make provision for development up to 2031 and beyond.
