Recycling centres

We provide recycling centres at convenient locations around the borough. Hertfordshire County Council provides Household Waste Recycling Centres for residents to recycle even more.

Recycling banks at Birchwood

Household Waste Recycling Centres (the tip/dump)

You can recycle a wider range of household waste and recycling at Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC's). For opening times and locations, as well as information about what you can recycle, see the county council's website.

From January 2015 opening times and days at Hertfordshire's Household Waste Recycling Centres changed and new schemes and services have been introduced.

Most sites are closed two days of the week, but all remain open five days a week, including Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. A van permit scheme has also been introduced, for anyone who wishes to dispose of household waste using a van, pickup truck, commercial type vehicle or vehicle and trailer. Further details can be found at www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/wasteaware.

The Household Waste Recycling Centres can get very busy, particularly in Spring/Summer. Remember to make use of your household bins and local recycling centres (recycling banks) before considering the HWRC's. Pre-sorting your rubbish and checking opening hours/days before you travel can also help reduce queuing time.

Advice for using a recycling centre

  • Rinse plastic bottles and glass containers.
  • Sort your glass bottles and jars by colour (small amounts of blue glass can go in the green bottle bank).
  • Please do not use the bottle banks late at night or early morning as the noise could disturb nearby residents.
  • Carefully crush cans and plastic bottles (remove lids) where possible so more can fit into the banks.
  • Please do not leave excess recyclables around the recycling banks if you have a lot or because the banks are full - they will not be recycled.
