Council Takes Measures to Alleviate Salisbury Square Parking Problem

News Item Details

Date
3.28pm, 8 September 2006

From Monday 18 September a car park barrier system, installed by Welwyn Hatfield Council, will come into operation at the Salisbury Square car park in Old Hatfield, opposite the railway station.

The barrier has been installed in response to appeals from local businesses and residents who often cannot gain access to the car park for their day-to-day business due to commuter parking.

The barrier will operate between the hours of 5am and 9am Monday to Friday and will limit parking to residents, businesses and visitors to the local amenities of Old Hatfield.

The car park will be available for general use outside these hours and, in line with current policy for other council car parks in the Hatfield area, will remain free of charge.

Councillor Mandy Perkins, Executive Member for Planning and Environmental Health, said: “We have listened to and acted on requests from local residents and businesses who have asked for measures to alleviate parking problems in this area. The problem has been that some commuters – who have access to the car park at Hatfield station – fill Salisbury Square car park early in the morning, making it unusable for residents, local businesses and visitors during the day.

“The car park being full all day – and subsequent lack of free parking – has become a deterrent to visitors, residents and businesses. If left unchecked, this could have consequences on the vitality of the area and there was an obvious need to rectify this situation. By introducing the barrier we are supporting Old Hatfield visitors, residents and local businesses in their need to have access to this free car park.”

If you would like further information or need regular access to this car park within the barrier hours please contact Allen Monk on 01707 357552.
