Pollarding work has begun along Parkway and Howardsgate. More information here.

Programmed tree removal

Sometimes it is necessary to remove trees that are dead, dying or have significant structural weaknesses. When the trees are felled, stumps are initially left in-situ at about a metre high so they are clearly visible. The stumps are then ground out in the subsequent months and the area is re soiled and seeded as necessary. All removal locations are added to the tree planting list for future consideration.

Glossary of terms

Coppice: To cut a tree down to a stump and allow it to regrow.

Decay: Process of degradation of wood by micro-organisms and fungus.

Decline: The response of the tree to a reduction of energy levels resulting from stress. Recovery from decline is difficult and slow, and decline usually irreversible.

Ground out: The root crown is removed by a machine to a depth sufficient for grass reinstatement. The ground is levelled off and grass seed sown.

Included union: A branch fork, which due to the shape, has compacted tissues with less strength. Included unions have an increased likelihood of failure.

Leader: A structural branch asserting apical dominance.

Ring barked: The bark has been removed from around the girth of the stem. This damages or removes the vascular system of the tree.

Diseases

Bleeding canker

Ganoderma sp.: Ganoderma sp. is a fungus which infects a wide range of tree species. Once noted on a tree, the severity of the works taken depends upon the species of tree. Some species can live with the infection for a long time, whilst others quickly become structurally weak.

Inonotus hispidus: This fungus most commonly occurs in the upper half of the stem and in the thicker branches. A brown fungal bracket with white underside appears from August onwards. With time the bracket turns black and drops off the tree in late winter or spring. The fungus digests the heartwood, making the stem or branches very weak.

Kretschmaria deusta: This is a fungus which digests the cell walls in the lowest part of the stem. It is a very small fungal fruiting body which grows between the buttressing. It looks like a flat, grey mould, maturing into a postulant, black, crust. This type of decay makes the wood in the stem very brittle and very likely to fail.

Laetiporus sulphurous: Laetiporus sulphurous is a fungus sometimes known as chicken of the woods or sulphur polypore. It affects a broad range of conifers and broadleaves. Over time the fungus eats away the heartwood leaving the tree susceptible to windthrow or snapping.

Meripilus giganteus: This is a fungus that affects the roots and stem of a tree, mainly Beech or Oak and its effects are such that it usually signals the removal of the tree due to the weakened structure.

Phellinus sp.: Phellinus sp. is a fungus which is found on rosaceous trees such as cherry, pear and apple. The fungus digests the wood within the stem and larger primary branches. This area becomes a weak point which can lead to failure.
