Updates about changes to business rates as a result of COVID-19 (Coronavirus).

Business rates

Further to the March 2021 budget announcement, the 100% business rate discount will continue to apply for all eligible businesses in the retail, hospitality, leisure and nursery sectors.

Eligible businesses could get:

  • 100% off your business rates bills for the 2020/21 tax year (1 April 2020 to 31 March 2021)
  • 100% off your business rates bills for the first 3 months of the 2021/22 tax year (1 April 2021 to 30 June 2021)
  • 66% off your business rates bills for the rest of the 2021/22 tax year (1 July 2021 to 31 March 2022) - up to a total value of £2 million

If your business was legally allowed to open during the national lockdown starting 5 January 2021, your discount for 1 July 2021 to 31 March 2022 will be capped at £105,000 rather than £2 million.

You do not need to do anything further as eligible businesses will receive written confirmation in March 2021 and a business rates bill will be sent around mid-June 2021 for the rates payable from 1 July 2021.

Businesses may choose to opt out of support by providing us with notification of their request to refuse support, per eligible premises.

The discount for office space used by local newspapers in England will continue until 31 March 2025.
