Updates about changes to rubbish and recycling collections as a result of COVID-19 (coronavirus).

Brown bin collections, for garden and food waste, have now restarted.

At the start of the coronavirus, depleted bin crews - due to self-isolation, increased need for social distancing and sickness - meant that the council had to make the difficult decision to suspend brown bin collections so that it could protect the vulnerable and prioritise the most critical collection services: refuse, recycling and clinical waste.

The crews are now able to restart brown bin collections alongside maintaining the regular priority collections.

Anyone who subscribed to the garden waste service both this year and last can put their bin out on their usual collection day. We will ensure everyone receives their final collection for 19/20 if they were missed due to the suspension of the service.

Registering for garden waste collections

To register, please visit our online Garden Waste Collection Service.

We are urging people to do this as soon as they can to ensure their bins are collected when collections resume.

Check our garden waste disruption page for more information about the restart of the service.

We are still sending stickers out to residents who have paid for the service. Please note that due to the current situation it may take longer than the usual 10 working days for them to arrive.

Waste storage

In order to protect our waste collection crews and combat the spread of infection, anyone who feels ill at home (whether diagnosed with COVID-19 or not) should:

  • place all waste - including recycling - in their refuse (black) bin
  • this should be double-bagged, making sure the bags are securely tied
  • wait at least 72 hours before placing it out for collection.

Please do not leave any sacks next to your bin.

Bulky waste collections

We will not be servicing new requests for bulky waste collections.

Bin requests / changes

We will be stopping requests for larger bins and other bin exchanges.

We will continue to deliver bins if you do not have them, for example, if you have just moved in.

Litter picking equipment

The Great British Spring Clean has been postponed and as a result, we will not be issuing any litter picking equipment until further notice.

If you want to do an individual litter pick, please follow the guidance on the keep britain tidy website.
