Sherrardspark Woodland Management Plan Consultation
Our vision is for Sherrardspark Wood to remain one of the most significant oak woodlands in Hertfordshire.
We manage the wood in line with a 10-year management plan, developed in collaboration with the Forestry Commission and Natural England. The current plan runs until the end of 2025, and a new plan has been prepared to guide the next decade of care.
Our aim is to continue to build resistance and resilience to potential threats such as climate change, pests and diseases, by focusing on the following priorities:
- Enhancing the age structure and genetic diversity of oak trees.
- Encouraging natural regeneration and applying traditional methods like coppicing to increase tree species diversity.
- Conserving both existing and emerging habitats, including open spaces, ponds, veteran trees, and dense understorey.
- Supporting local wildlife, including birds, small mammals, and invertebrates.
- Preserving the wood’s historical features.
- Monitoring and managing threats from pests, diseases, and invasive species.
We also recognise the importance of the wood to both the local community and its visitors. We're committed to maintaining a safe, accessible, and welcoming environment for all, while also supporting its role in the local economy.
We will be sharing the full plan with the following organisations for their view:
- Natural England
- Forestry Commission
- Sherrardspark Wood Wardens Society
- Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust
- Hertfordshire County Council
- Herts Natural History Society
- WHBC Biodiversity and Climate Change Cabinet Pannel
