Guidelines and protocols for Mayor event invites

To assist your arrangements when the Mayor and/or Deputy Mayor attend a function or engagement the following guidelines are set out.

Guidelines

As the First Citizen of Welwyn Hatfield, the Mayor should be accorded precedence on all occasions when they are present at events in the Borough. The only exception to this is when an event is attended by a member of the Royal Family or when Her Majesty is represented on official occasions in the Borough by the Lord Lieutenant of the County.

Organisers are particularly asked to note the customary etiquette and courtesies when the Mayor is present at a function. It is emphasised that, with the exception mentioned above, no one else should be accorded precedence over the Mayor.

Although the Mayoress or Mayor’s Consort are not legally appointed offices, it is expected that they be extended due courtesies.

If the Civic Head of another authority is to be invited to an event, the Mayor’s Office should first be consulted and the Borough Mayor included on the list of invitees to that function.

At all official functions the Mayor will be wearing the Chain of Office and can therefore be recognised easily.

The Mayor will be delighted to answer any questions about the Chain of Office or the Coat of Arms.

Announcements

When a formal announcement is made, this should be: “The Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield, Councillor . . . . . . . . . .’’

When the Mayor is accompanied, it is: “The Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield, Councillor . . . . . . . . . . and . . . . . . . . . . ’’
