Get clinical waste collected

We provide free clinical waste collections for infectious waste for households within Welwyn Hatfield.

You can dispose of clinical waste in:

  • orange sacks
  • a sharps box

Orange sacks

Orange sacks are used for infectious waste such as dressings used to treat wounds and stoma bags.

Regular collections are made weekly.

Sacks are provided. We will be unable to collect sacks or containers that are not the orange sacks provided.

Sharps box

Sharps boxes are used for syringe needles, cartridges, and any other contaminated disposable instruments.

Regular collections are made monthly.

Request a clinical waste collection

You will need to get your nurse or GP to write to our waste and recycling contractor, Urbaser, confirming you need this particular service. They can send these details via email to llancashire@urbaser.co.uk and ewilliams@urbaser.co.uk once received you will be contacted to confirm collections.

We provide a free clinical waste collection for infectious waste usually requested through surgery, practice or hospital for:

  •   Swabs and dressings
  •   Specified waste consisting of human or animal tissue, blood or bodily fluids

Non-infectious waste

You can dispose of non-infectious waste through your usual domestic waste collection service. If you are unsure whether your waste is infectious or non-infectious you will need to check this with your doctor.

The following sanitary waste items are classed as non-infectious and can be put in a tied up bag and placed into your normal household refuse container:

  • Incontinence pads
  • Nappies (adult and child)
  • Sanitary products
  • Empty stoma bags
